The subject is believed to be Vira Boarman Whitehouse (American, 1875-1957), the wife of James Norman de Rapelye Whitehouse. Vira Boarman Whitehouse was a prominent figure in the suffrage movement, the owner of the Whitehouse Leather Company, and an early proponent of birth control.
