Oil on canvas portrait entitled “Miss Henrietta Keteltas” (American, 1837) by Cephas Giovanni Thompson (American, 1809-1888). Painted in New York, August 1837, the painting depicts an eight-year-old Henrietta Keteltas (American, 1829-1858), the sister of Mrs. Edith Keteltas Wetmore (American, 1848-1927). She is depicted at bust length, her gaze is turned towards the view, her shoulders are bare, and her hair is styled in ringlets. The canvas is housed in a contemporary giltwood rococo-revival frame.

The artist, Cephas Giovanni Thompson was born in 1809 in Middleboro, Massachusetts and began his career at Plymouth. In 1837, he settled in New York City, having worked in Boston, Bristol, and Philadelphia. In 1840, he did portraits of leading citizens in New Bedford and from 1849 to 1852 was in Boston. In 1852, he went to Europe with his family and spent seven years in Italy where he became a friend of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1859, he returned to New York City where he remained until his death in 1888.
