Description
A pair of etchings by Sir Robert Strange (English, 1721-1792) after paintings by Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641).
.1 = The etching “Charles I and the Duke of Hamilton” (English, 1782) depicts King Charles I standing in profile and the Duke of Hamilton behind him, under a tree with an arm around the king’s horse. Beneath the image on the left corner the print is inscribed “Antonius Vandiick Eques Pinxit”, and on the right corner “Robertus Strange delint. Atque sculpsit A.D. 1782.” Below the image at center it is inscribed “Carolo Imo. Magne Britanniae Regi, &c. / Jacobus Hamiltonius, Marchio ab Hamilton, Sacri Stabuli Comes, adstat. / E Tabula Antonii Vandiick Equitis, 8 pedes et 9 digitos alta, 6 pedes et 10 digitos lata, in Pincotheca Regis Christianissimi conservata.”
.2 = The etching “Henrietta Maria Magnae Britanniae Regina” (English, 1784) depicts Queen Henrietta Maria sitting in front of drapery on a balcony. She holds the infant Prince James on her knee and Prince Charles stands by her chair on the right clutching her skirt, surrounding Prince Charles are three small dogs. Beneath the image on the left corner the print is inscribed “Antonius van Dyck Eques Pinxit”, and on the right corner “Robertus Strange delint. atque sculpsit Londini AD. 1784.” Inscribed below the title at center is “Comitantibus Carolo Principe Walliae, et Jacobo Eboraci Duce / E Tabula Antonii van Dyck Equitis, in Pinacotheca Regis Britannici conservata.”
