Watercolor Rendering of the Proposed New Stables at Chateau-sur-mer

A watercolor rendering of the proposed new stables at Chateau-sur-Mer (English, c. 1880) by the St. Pancras Iron Works in London. Between 1876 and 1883 George Peabody Wetmore undertook expansions to his estate following the sale of parcels of land. The first and most significant change was to the Carriage House-Stable complex. The proposal shows the stables greatly enlarged in an ornate Victorian style. Ultimately, Wetmore chose not to carry the design by St. Pancras Iron Works out. Instead, he gave the commission to George Champlin Mason, a local Newport architect, who expanded the stables around the original structure designed by Seth Bradford. Original to Chateau-sur-Mer.
