Description
A painted blue silk Masonic banner (American, 19th century) from Holland Lodge, New York. The banner has a gold fringe border and is painted with various masonic symbols. Across the top is the motto “LOYAL - UNITED – FRIENDS” above the all-seeing eye, a motto across the bottom reads “HOPE IS OUR ANCHOR” below a cartouche surrounded by laurel leaves painted with the figure of Hope. Formerly in the collection of William Watts Sherman (1842-1912), the husband of Annie Derby Rogers Wetmore (1848-1884).
