Description
A majolica platter (English, 1860-1891) made by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. The oblong shaped platter has squared ends and an incised rope form border around the outer edge, the rim is decorated with molded waves and seaweed, two seaweed stalks adorn the central plate surface against a raised relief grid pattern in grey/green against a white ground. This grid pattern may be referencing the ribbing or planks of a ship. The underside of the platter is impressed “WEDGWOOD” along with the single letter “A” and a partially pressed three-letter date code, it is also inscribed in red under glaze with a pattern number.
