Description
An art-pottery orange still-life majolica plate (French, c. 1880) produced by the Perret-Gentil factory, Menton, France. The majolica plate creates a trompe l’oeil (trick of the eye) effect with its applied high relief naturalistic cluster of three ripe and three small green oranges attached to their cut branch with a spray of white orange blossoms set against a light blue ground. The underside of the plate is signed in black glaze script “Perret Gentil / Menton”.
French majolica (commonly referred to as “Barbotine”) ceramics depicting citrus fruits were popular souvenirs purchased by wealthy Victorians visiting the French Rivera. Perret-Gentil was one of the best know ceramic manufacturers in Menton. The factory was started in 1879 by the Swiss potter Eugène Perret-Gentil, the peak of its majolica production started in 1890 and continued through to around 1920.
