Description
A Charles II armchair (English, c. 1680) composed of carved oak with a caned back and seat. The arched crest rail is centered on a crown flanked by S-scroll acanthus leaves, this design is repeated around the oval canned back panel and front stretcher. The block and spiral turned back posts are decorated with carved foliate forms and topped with crown shaped finials. The arm rests are carved with foliate forms, terminate into scroll handles, and are raised on spiral turned supports. The seat rail is carved with a raised leaf border. The whole is raised on four spiral and block turned legs, the front two of which are carved with floral sprigs and terminate into paw feet. The legs are connected by four cross stretchers, the front described above, the side and rear are spiral.
