Description
Two coal carts (American, c. 1901) produced by C.W. Hunt Company, New York. Original to The Elms, these coal carts are located in the sub-basement in the Coal Storage Room. A tunnel, which extends to just outside the walls of The Elms on Dixon Street, connects to the Coal Storage Room. Coal would have been delivered on Dixon Street and transported down the tunnel in these carts to the Coal Storage Room. A circular track allowed the carts to be turned around easily. The coal was used to power three large boilers.
In raised lettering on the front opening compartment of the coal cart is “C.W. HUNT COMPANY / NEW YORK” and below is the model number “41309”.
