Description
A rosewater sprinkler (Chinese, c. 1850) made of sterling silver by Wang Hing & Co., Canton, China. The cup-shaped body of the flagon rests on a circular foot and is decorated with gadrooning and foliage. The tall and slender neck is decorated with leaves, the perforated top screws on and off. The underside of the base is impressed with Wang Hing’s maker’s mark, an oblong cartouche bears Chinese characters, a rectangular punch contains “WH”, and above this is a square punch with “90”.
Wang Hing & Co. was established in Canton in 1854, it would go on to become the most prolific maker of export silver during the late China Trade period.
