Description
A sixteen-piece Neo-Greco bedroom suite (American, c. 1875) in the Eastlake style, made of American Butternut wood and decorated with ebonized banding and incised gilt leafage.
. 1= A three-door armoire with a central mirrored panel. Both side doors have five rectangular and square incised decorations, bordered with ebonized detailing and floral gilt decorations. The central mirrored panel has one rectangular decoration above the mirror. Ebonized banding is also featured along the bottom molding and top frieze.
.2= A bedstead with the monogram “GPW” within a circle on the headboard top rail. The monogram is for George P. Wetmore (American, 1846-1921) of Chateau-sur-mer. The rectangular headboard is surmounted by an arched design and ebonized molding with urn-shaped finials atop each headboard leg. The edges of the footboard curve into the baseboard and continues the ebonized molding and gilt leaf details. A carved arch design tops the footboard and urn-finials surmount the legs.
.3= A dressing table inset with blue leather. The rectangular table features five lockable drawers with ebonized molding and gilt leaf decorations along the keyways. Both side drawers end with lambrequins which feature curling ebonized trim and gilt scrollwork. The table is raised on eight turned and fluted legs on casters.
.4ab - .5ab= Two marble-top stands with ebonized trim and gilt scrollwork designs.
.6 & .11= A wardrobe cabinet with two doors under three drawers. The entire piece features ebonized trim along the doors, drawers, bottom moldings, and frieze. The doors also include circular carved floral medallions and central gilt scrollwork designs. Each keyway is decorated with gilt leaves patterns.
.8 = A marble-top commode with ebonized trim and gilt scrollwork and leaf designs.
.9= A bookcase with three shelves, each of which has an ebonized trim along the edge and riveted detailing. The frieze is decorated with a geometric gilt trim and leaf design. Ionic column designed pilasters made of turned wood and ebonized banding decorate the front sides.
.10= An easel mirror and stand made of turned butternut wood. The mirror is elevated on a hinge between two pilasters with finials on four bun-feet.
.13-.16= Caned seat side chairs with rectangular backs consisting of square stiles and rails and ebonized apron trim. Two front baluster turned legs feature ebonized middle decoration and fully ebonized ball feet and stretchers. The back two legs are slightly outturned and tapered.
