Description
A wooden casket (Italian, 16-17th century) made of dark wood in a Renaissance design. The central panel of the casket depicts heavily carved putti flanking a coat of arms surrounded by tendrils and leaves. On the inner side of the hinged lid is penciled “D.M. Armstrong bought at Rome 12 November 1869”. The piece was likely bought when David King Maitland Armstrong was touring Rome as envoy to the Papal states.
