Description
A Renaissance Revival salt cellar (French, c. 1875) made of silver in the shape of a boat. A bearded mask decorates the stern and supports a tiller beneath two putti holding a globe decorated with fleur-de-lys. The whole rests on four working wheels, which are connected to the body of the boat with dolphin motifs. Various shields depicting dragons, antlers, lions, masks, and stars align the sides. Heading the boat is a winged cherub figure. Stamped on the bottom of the piece are four unidentified, and obscured, marks depicting a sunburst, possibly a trident, and two monograms topped with crowns.
