Description
A pill box (French, c. 1880) made of silver with a hinged lid and repoussé decorations. The edges of the square box are banded with C-scroll foliate and floral designs that continue onto the lid, where it borders the depiction of a pastoral scene. Within the scene, a shepherdess and shepherd lounge in grass under a tree, the shepherdess’ staff and a lamb lay next to her. A second pastoral scene decorates the vermeil-washed interior of the box. An aristocratic couple sits in a garden beneath a tree while a putto plays the harp. A Chinoiserie pagoda can be seen in the background upon a hill. Stamped into the interior are two marks, one a swan and the other an eagle above three flowers.
