Description
A repoussé stringed guitar (Dutch, c. 1880) made of silver with a hinged lid. The front of the guitar consists of the hinged lid and is decorated with a pastoral scene of a shepherdess with lambs and a male musician playing a flute with a mandolin resting by his feet. Surrounding them are trees, grass, and a distant town. The neck and saddle of the guitar holds four individual strings, each wrapped around their own peg. To the right side of the front and along the sides are foliate scroll detailing. The interior of the guitar is coated in a gold wash. Along the back of the guitar is a scene of two putti in a room with a basin of water, where they are either bathing or washing laundry. Two illegible marks are stamped into the back, as well as a silver fineness number of 800.
