Description
A CARVED AND GILT FOLDING SCREEN (French, c. 1730) by Jacques Vigoureux Duplessis (French, active 1699-1730). The six-panel screen is ornamented with 18th century oil panels painted by Duplessis set in a late 19th century gilt bronze frame. The reverse of the screen is set with mullioned mirrors. On the front, each panel features Chinoiserie court scenes with overlaid medallions of mythological scenes depicting Apollo and Daphne, Zeus and Danae, and others. A similar screen formerly in the collection of Victor Rothschild is signed and dated 1730.
Jacques Vigoureux Duplessis was a famed ornamental artist of the early 18th century who later became the decorator for sets of the Paris Opera and illustrator of the works of Lully. From 1721-1726, Duplessis was appointed cartoon designer and instructor of design at the tapestry works of Beauvais in France. The earliest known work by Duplessis is a c. 1700 Chinoiserie fire screen in the collection of The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD.
