Description
An oil on canvas landscape painting of "Whitehall" (American, c. 1875) by Thomas Worthington Whittredge. The painting depicts Whitehall, the home of Bishop George Berkeley, in Middletown, RI. The pastoral scene faces north and includes sheep, stone walls, and a glimpse of the water behind the house. Berkeley lived at Whitehall from 1729 - 1731. This same rear perspective of the house's saltbox room was photographed and published by architect Charles Follen McKim in the "New York Sketch Book of Architecture" in 1874 and quickly became an iconic image in the Colonial Revival era.
