This photograph was taken c. 1870 at Beaulieu, Newport (the estate of Frederick de Barreda) depicting the Newport Young Ladies Archery Society. Two members that can be identified are Elvira de Barreda Sherman, standing in profile at the left end of the back row, and her sister Mathilde, with down-cast eyes, third from the right in the back row. For the posing of this photo it is believed the women were permitted to assume the poses which they believed would show them to the best advantage.
