Notes
This panel is like the panels painted for Archer Huntington's dining room in New York City, now the home of the National Academy of Design. According to William Adams Delano, "he adopted the well know classical detail of children bearing garlands, but he treated both the children and the garlands in such individual manner that much of the stiffness of the old classical models is lost; and the blacks, whites and reds in which they are painted give another proof of his skill in handling color." Instead of Italianate putti as bearers of fruit, in The Bounty Cushing portrays androgynous Asian youths in a stylized design, blending the Western classical motif with Orientalism.
