Notes
Howard Cushing was a great admirer and disciple of his friend, James M. Whistler, who created the Aesthetic Movement's famous Peacock Room. The decorative quality of the peacock as well as its representation in both Hiroshige prints and classical mythology made it a natural subject for Cushing, who likely created this panel as a study for the extensive mural he made for his New York residence, which consisted of exotic trees and birds.
