Notes
This marine painting of the south coast in Rhode Island combines traces of the artist's luminist sensibilities, as well as a more somber tonalist palette indicative of the turn-of-the-century style. It reflects the artist's love for and mastery of the sea, a subject which he had pursued in careful studies of waves and beaches for decades. Richards, who lived in the Newport area from 1874 until his death, was well known and respected for his many oils and watercolors of Narragansett Bay and its environs.
