Notes
Emily Burling Waite had her first solo show at the Art Association of Newport in 1917, showing both portraits and etchings. Her portraits were praised by John Singer Sargent according to one review. She exhibited in the AAN American annuals up through the 1950s, and had a number of works in the 1939 Tercentenary : "The History of Newport in Pictures." Educated at the Art Students League in New York and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Waite had won a traveling scholarship and continued her studies in Europe. Although she resided in Newport for a few years, her permanent address was in Boston and later Worcester, where she was born. In 1969 the Archives indicate that Waite was still exhibiting and selling her delicate etchings of Newport at the Art Association.
