Originally from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, James Maxfield established a studio on Block Island where he painted the ships and seacoast around him. He made his living as a commercial artist, painting signs, murals and scenery for theaters. He was the father of Clara Maxfield Arnold (1879-1959), a painter of still lifes from East Providence, Rhode Island.
