Notes
Janet Alling found her way to painting flowers after studying at Yale School of Art and Architecture in the early 1960s, where abstract expressionism had been king and her instructors, Alex Katz, Neil Welliver and Philip Pearlstein painted the figure. Alling wants to give flowers the same credibility as figures or landscapes and to this end she has painted large-scale "portraits" of gloxinias, tulips, irises and all manner of flora. Her work was shown at the Newport Art Museum in an exhibition and catalogue in 2010. Alling lives in Providence, RI.
