Helena Sturtevant was one of the eight founding artists of the Art Association of Newport (now the Newport Art Museum), as well as the first and longest director of its school, and one of Newport's most accomplished artists. Her shimmering scenes of area beaches and landscapes attest to the impressionist influence to which she responded during her time in Paris. Born and raised in the "Paradise" area of Middletown, Rhode Island (adjacent to Newport), she studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, under Edmund Tarbell, and in Paris at the Colarossi and La Grande Chaumiére Academies. She had her first solo exhibition at the Art Association in 1913 and exhibited continually up until her death.
