Description
A full-length portrait of Nathaniel P. Hill composed of oil on canvas (English, 1905) by Mary Lemon Waller (English, 1851-1931). Nathaniel P. Hill IV (American, 1896-1965) was the grandson and namesake of Nathaniel Hill, a former Brown University professor and mining engineer who pioneered the smelting of gold from rocks and was elected Colorado’s U.S. Senator in 1879.
Here, the younger Hill, is depicted standing against a stone balustrade. His gaze is directed at the viewer, his left hand rests on a stone wall and he holds a riding crop in his lowered right hand. He stands on a flagstone walkway with his left leg raised on a step. He wears a black velvet riding outfit with a lace collar and cuffs, a black buckled leather belt around his waist, black calf-length hosiery, and black patent leather shoes. Birch trees and a pastoral landscape are in the background. The canvas is signed on the bottom left corner “M.L. Waller / 1905”.
Hill’s mother, Mrs. Crawford P. Hill (née Evelyn Loew), is captured in the portrait PSNC.1481 by Louis Mark.
