Description
“Portrait of Jules Celestin Allard” (French, 1889) by Fernand Cormon (French, 1845-1924). Here the famed French decorator Jules Celestin Allard (French, 1832-1907) is depicted sitting at three-quarter length, facing forward and wearing a black suit and white shirt with a gold stick-pin. His hair is worn long, his right arm over the back of a Louis XIII style tapestry covered side chair and his left arm resting on a Louis XV style bureau-plat. The canvas is signed "F Cormon 89" in script in the lower left. It is housed in an elaborate leaf carved giltwood frame, with a plaque on the front inscribed "Jules C. Allard / 1832 - 1907 / Fernand Cormon / 1889." The decorating firm Jules Allard et ses Fils was responsible for the interiors of The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff and The Breakers.
