Description
David King (1774-1836), a first cousin of the artist, lived in Newport and was one of the earliest promoters of the Rhode Island Medical Society. He was responsible for many medical firsts in Rhode Island, including treating a patient with yellow fever (and thus ending an epidemic in Newport), and administering a vaccination. Dr. King was active in the revival of the Redwood in 1810, served as director, and was President of the Library from 1830 to 1836. This one of the earliest known paintings by Charles Bird King.
