Portrait after Gilbert Stuart. James Madison (1751-1836), fourth president of the United States, was born in Virginia. He graduated from Princeton in 1771 was a Graduate of Princeton College in 1771. He was a delegate to Congress from Virginia 1780-83; a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787; Member of Congress from Virginia 1789-97; Secretary of State 1801-09, and President 1809-17. Known as the father of the constitution, he was also considered a founder of the Democratic Party.
