Description
George McDuffie (1790-1851) was an avid defender of the South and of state’s rights during the 1820s and 1830s. He was a close friend of John C. Calhoun and openly debated with and disliked William H. Crawford, who held opposing views. McDuffie served as Governor of South Carolina (1834-1836), was a member of Congress (1821-1834), and was also a United States Senator (1843-1846).
