Description
Photograph from the 1883 Vanderbilt Fancy Dress Ball album, taken by Jose Maria Mora (Cuban, c. 1847-1926), depicting Mrs. W. D. Sloan (née Emily Vanderbilt) dresses as Little Bo-Peep. A contemporary account from the New York Times described her costume: "Mrs. W. D. Sloan, one of Mr. Vanderbilt's sisters, as Little Bo-peep, wore a short quilted skirt of red satin, crossed with strips of black velvet, to form diamonds. The over dress was of an antique brocade, embroidered with poppies and looped up so as to appear very bouffant. The waist was low and pointed, the vest of black velvet with a brocade of poppies around the neck and sleeves."
