An engraved map entitled "Carte des positions occupeé par les trouppes Américaines apres leur retraite de Rhode Island le 30 Aout 1778" (French, dated 1778) by an unknown engraver, after a map by Major Michel Capitaine du Chesnoy (1764-1804). The map depicts Narragansett Bay, the East and West Passages, the Taunton and Providence Rivers, and the prominent towns along these bodies of water occupied by American troops on August 30, 1778. On the lower right, below the map scale, the work is signed "Major Capitaine A de C. du G. Lafayette" in script. The map is housed in a black painted wooden frame with gilt accents.
Major Michel Capitaine du Chesnoy was a geographical engineer who served as Lafayette’s aide-de-camp. His principal duty was mapping the engagements in which Lafayette participated.
