An engraved map entitled "A Plan of the Town of Newport in the Province of Rhode Island" (English, dated 1776), engraved and published by Colonel Joseph F. W. Des Barres (1722-1824). The map shows the city of Newport, RI, with Goat Island in the foreground above a reference block indicating important wharfs, public buildings, and streets in black script. On the bottom right corner, beneath the yellow watercolor border, is printed "Publishd according to Act, April 24, 1776 by J.F.W. Des Barres Esq." This map is part of a series from "The Atlantic Neptune", compiled by Des Barres for use by the English navy.
