A mezzotint portrait entitled "Le Général Washington Ne Quid Detrimenti capiat Res publica" (French, c. 1785) engraved by Noël le Mire (French, 1724-1800), after a painting by Jean Baptiste Lepaon (French, 1738-1785). The subject, General George Washington (1732-1799), is depicted standing at full length, facing forward, wearing a military uniform. He holds the Declaration of Independence and the treaty of alliance with France in his right hand, his left is tucked into his vest. Littered around his feet are torn British proclamations seeking reconciliation, titles include "The Bill to Pardon The Rebels of North America" and "Protection to Rebels on Submission." In the background behind the General is a large table scattered with maps, books, and documents. On the left is the General‘s tent, to the right is a Black (likely enslaved, possibly William 'Billy' Lee) valet wearing a turban and attending Washington’s horse. In the far background on the right is a military encampment beside a river.
