Description
A commemorative porcelain pitcher (English, 1912) designed and produced by A. E. Gray & Co Ltd, Hanley, England for Patriotic Products Association, Philadelphia. The pitcher commemorates the 1812 battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Java, the opening rim and base is bordered by a band of stars, the inside rim reads “OLD IRONSIDES” above an anchor, the front depicts a cartouche scene of the battle between the two frigates, below is a poem about the ship. On the reverse is a medallion bust portrait of Commode Bainbridge with a battle log of the Constitution below. The underside is marked “PATRIORIC PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION - PHILADELPHIA” within a shield, below is “TRADE MARK / DESIGNED & PRODUCED / BY / A. E. GRAY & Co Ltd / - HANLEY - / ENGLAND / THIS IS No 383 OF A FIRST AND LIMITED EDITION / PATENT APPLIED FOR.”
