An engraving entitled "The Surrender of General Lee: and His Entire Army to Lieut. General U.S. Grant, April 9th 1865" (American, 1868) by John McRae (American, 1793-1880), published by Thomas Kelly, 364 Third Ave, NY. Marking the end of the Civil War, the print depicts the two generals standing before a spreading tree as Lee hands a letter of surrender to Grant, the opposing armies are assembled in the background. Directly below the image at center the engraving is inscribed “Entered according to Act of Congress AD 1868 by Thos. Kelly in the Clerks Office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York”, and below the bottom right corner of the image “Engd by John C. McRae, N.Y.”
